On July 26, Kuala Lumpur Immanuel Church held its last Sunday service of the month.

At the service held on this day, presided over by leader Dorca Lim, Pastor Maryon Kim offered an intercessory prayer, and Pastor Samuel Chang delivered a sermon titled “Salt and Light” based on Matthew 5:13–16. He reminded the congregation that Jesus defined His disciples using these two powerful metaphors, urging believers to understand their true identity and mission in a dark and corrupted world.

Pastor Chang first explained that salt symbolizes purity, holiness, and preservation. Just as the ocean remains uncorrupted because of its 3.5 percent salt content, true Christians—even if they are a minority—act as a moral and spiritual preservative to keep society from completely decaying. He noted that like the righteous men needed to save Sodom and Gomorrah, faithful believers have the power to influence and change their environment.

However, the Pastor warned against losing one’s saltiness, which renders a believer useless and spiritually compromised. Using stern biblical warnings, he compared Christians who return to worldly ways to a dog returning to its vomit or a washed pig returning to the mud. He emphasized that believers must guard themselves against secularization and never bring public disgrace to the name of Christ.

Transitioning to the second metaphor, Pastor Chang highlighted that believers are “the light of the world” called to dispel darkness. Just as ancient households placed lamps high on stands to illuminate every corner, Christians must not hide their faith. Instead, they are called to live out the truth openly.

The Pastor explained that light and darkness cannot coexist, meaning that true believers must keep themselves unpolluted by the world. By performing good deeds and revealing the truth, Christians draw others to see their witness and ultimately give glory to God the Father in heaven.

Concluding the service, Pastor Chang urged every member of the congregation to live out their divine calling. He prayed that the grace and abundance of the Holy Spirit would empower the believers at KL Immanuel Church to shine brightly as salt and light until the Lord’s return.
